2024 in pictures: Striking images that made the headlines

And just like that, another year comes to a close. As 2024 draws to an end, we reflect on a year filled with stories capturing a spectrum of emotions from anger to pride and joy in this beautiful region.

The county and its people have once again showcased its enduring charm, vibrant communities and stunning landscapes which can often become quite dangerous in severe weather conditions. There have been heartwarming moments and difficult ones.

Looking back on the year, we saw some vibrant celebrations and festivals. There were also visits from all manners of vessels from giant cruise ships to a £68 million superyacht, making for striking images.

A series of unsettled weather conditions brought everything from glorious sunshine to snow settling on higher ground, with storms including the first, Storm Henk, in January and the final, Storm Darragh, in early December. Streets were flooded and trees brought down by each brought our way, while some areas suffered power outages that lasted days.
