200 school closures announced for Tuesday as UK snow storm continues

As many as 200 school closures have been confirmed across swathes of Scotland, Yorkshire and Lancashire as the North West of England and north of the border are battered by heavy snowfall as we head further away from Christmas.

The widespread adverse conditions have led to the closure of schools across the country. The Department for Transport explained: “In exceptional circumstances, a pupil may be unable to attend school because a local or national emergency has resulted in widespread disruption to travel.

“If parents believe it would be unsafe to travel, they should inform the school as soon as possible to let them know their child won’t be attending and why (in line with the schools absence policy).” The big freeze caused further havoc today as flights were disrupted, schools closed and bin collections were thrown into chaos – with more snow on the way.

Met Office warnings for snow and ice remained in force across much of the UK after severe flooding and blizzards caused motorway chaos and shut railway lines.
