A 17-year-old boy has been arrested after two teenagers died following a crash in the Preston area in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Humberside Police have also renewed an appeal for information following the tragedy on around 1.20am on January 1. It’s reported a grey Volkswagen Golf was travelling along Staithes Road away from Preston when it was in collision with a black Vauxhall Grandland heading in the opposite direction.
Two passengers in the Golf sadly dead – a 16-year-old boy who was pronounced dead at the scene, and an 18-year-old man who was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but tragically died a short while later.
Police say two other passengers in the Volkswagen were badly injured. A girl, aged 16, remains in a critical but stable condition and a teenage boy, aged 17, is now in a serious but stable condition.
A passenger in the Vauxhall, a 62-year-old man, was taken to hospital to receive treatment for injuries which are “no longer life threatening” while the driver, a woman aged 34, suffered a serious injury to her arm. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries.
This morning, a Humberside Police spokesperson said: “The driver of the Volkswagen, a teenage boy, aged 17 was arrested yesterday (Wednesday 1 January) on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
“He has been released on bail whilst enquiries continue.
“The families continue to be supported by specialist trained officers at this extremely difficult time.
“We would appeal for anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the collision, who has dashcam footage or witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to us, to contact us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 60 of 1 January.”
