A number of roads have been affected by flooding across Wirral following rain, snow and sleet over the weekend. Wirral Council said road closures are in place for the worst affected areas as it continues to monitor the situation.

Across Merseyside, the M56 and the M53 have been affected and roads across the region have had to close. This follows snow and ice amber warnings over the weekend following by a yellow warning on Monday morning.

In a weather update, Wirral Council said the flooding in Wirral was “predominately as a result of melting snow,” adding: “Road closures have been put in place at the worst affected areas. Road users are advised to adhere to the signage and road closures in place – these have been introduced for your safety.

“Our highways teams are continuing to inspect and monitor the situation on our roads.”

The local authority said 15 roads had been affected by flooding:

  • China Farm Lane
  • Brimstage Road (Village area and Brimstage Lane)
  • Woodchurch Road (M53 J 3)
  • Bromborough Road (From Spital Road to Quarry Road East)
  • Poulton Road / Dibbinsdale Road
  • Rigby Drive
  • Thornton Common Road (traveling towards Thornton Hough / also Thornton Common Road at Clatterbridge Road Rocklands Lane and St Georges Way)
  • Arrowe Brook Lane Road (Junction of Mill Lane)
  • Ellens Lane
  • Column Road / Grange Cross Lane
  • Clatterbridge Road (outside Claire House)
  • Willow Lane / Willaston Road
  • Spital Road (Spital Dam/ Junction of St Andrews Road including Arkwood Close)
  • Poulton Hall Road (by Rugby Club)
  • Willaston Road / Willaston Lane junction

The council said its gritting teams had been out over the weekend and were on 24/7 standby to monitor the situation. All waste services were also out on January 6.

Wirral Council said: “Despite the localised flooding in parts of the collection rounds today, particularly South Wirral areas, Biffa will continue to complete rounds where practicable.

“Any missed roads due to this aspect will be mapped out for collection tomorrow prior to Tuesdays work commencing, however, our waste contractors Biffa are confident that crews will complete today.”
